Most steel contractors in Utah County will not return a homeowner's call. Not because your job is bad. Because a 30x40 shop does not move their number the way a 40,000 square foot distribution center does, and they know they can fill their calendar without you.

That is the whole reason Ridge Runner Steel exists. Shaun Oram has spent 22 years in steel, and a good share of that has been the work larger outfits shrug off. A detached garage next to a stucco house in Fountain Green, Utah. A barn on five acres outside Nephi. A carport that has to clear a scissor lift. Real buildings for real people who just want somebody to show up and put the thing together right.

If you already bought a kit and it is sitting on pallets in your driveway, we can erect it. If you have not bought anything yet, call before you do. Kit companies sell steel. They do not always sell you the right steel for your lot, your snow load, or your county.

What We Build for Homeowners

Anything steel and residential. If it goes on your property and it is made of metal, it is in scope.

The big one. Two-bay, three-bay, however wide you need it. Overhead doors, concrete stem wall, insulation if you plan to heat it through a Sanpete County winter.

What a Steel Shop Actually Costs in Utah County

Here is where most homeowners get surprised. The steel kit is not the expensive part. Concrete, doors, and the pad prep underneath it all routinely add up to as much as the building itself. Anyone who quotes you a single number without seeing your lot is guessing, and they are usually guessing low so you will keep talking to them.

Ballpark ranges below are for the finished, erected building. Not a kit price. Not a labor-only price. What you would actually spend to walk out your back door and have a shop standing there.

Size
Typical Range
What Drives the Number
24x24 Garage
$18k to $32k
Single overhead door, basic slab, no insulation. Cheapest real building you can put up.
30x40 Shop
$35k to $65k
The most common request we get. Two doors, thicker slab, often insulated and heated.
40x60 Shop or Barn
$60k to $110k
Taller sidewalls, bigger doors, more steel. Equipment storage and serious hobby space.
Carport / Open-Front
$8k to $25k
No doors and often gravel instead of a slab. Big savings, and it still keeps snow off.

These are real ranges from real Utah County and Sanpete County jobs, not a national average. Your number moves based on site access, how level the pad is, snow load for your elevation, door count, and whether you are heating the space. We will give you a straight figure after we stand on your lot.

Building Steel in Utah Is Not Like Building Steel Anywhere Else

Two things trip up out-of-state kit companies constantly, and both of them cost homeowners money after the fact.

The first is snow. Fountain Green sits near 5,900 feet, and the benches above Payson and Nephi go higher. Ground snow loads across Sanpete and Utah County run far above what a generic kit is engineered for. If nobody asked you about your elevation before selling you a building, that is a problem you will find out about in February.

The second is frost depth. Footings in this part of Utah need to get down below the frost line or your slab will move on you. We have been called out to buildings that heaved because somebody poured shallow to save a few hundred dollars on concrete.

  • Snow loads sized for your actual elevation, not a catalog default
  • Footings below frost depth so the slab stays put
  • Wind bracing that accounts for canyon exposure
  • We flag permit and setback issues before you order steel

How Your Build Goes

Four steps. No mystery, no ghosting, no waiting three weeks to hear back.

1

Step 1. Site Visit

We come out and stand on the spot. Look at access, grade, setbacks, and where you actually want the doors. Usually within 1 to 2 days of your call.

2

Step 2. Straight Quote

You get a real number with the concrete, the doors, and the erection broken out. No lump-sum guessing, no surprise change orders halfway through.

3

Step 3. Pad and Foundation

Site prep, footings below frost, slab poured to hold whatever you plan to park on it. This is the part that decides whether the building lasts.

4

Step 4. Steel Goes Up

Frame, purlins, panels, trim, doors. Most residential shops go up in a matter of days once the concrete has cured. Then it is yours.

Why Homeowners Call Ridge Runner

Three reasons, and none of them are marketing.

01

We Answer the Phone

Call Shaun at 435-262-2794 and you get Shaun. Not a call center, not a form that goes nowhere. Most site visits happen within a day or two.

02

Your Job Is Not Too Small

No project minimum. A carport is a real job. A single-bay garage is a real job. We built this company on the work everybody else declined to bid.

03

22 Years Means We've Seen It

Bad kits. Heaved slabs. Frames that arrived missing pieces. Two decades of steel means we know what goes wrong before it goes wrong on your lot.

Residential Steel Building Questions, Answered Straight

Most 30x40 shops in Utah County land somewhere between $35,000 and $65,000 finished. The spread is that wide because concrete, doors, and insulation swing the number hard. A gravel-floor shell with one door sits near the bottom. An insulated, heated shop with two overhead doors and a slab rated for a lift sits at the top. Call 435-262-2794 and we will give you a real figure for your lot.
Almost always, yes. Most Utah cities and counties require a building permit for any permanent structure over a certain footprint, and setback rules vary a lot between a city lot and county acreage. Requirements differ between Fountain Green, Provo, and unincorporated Sanpete County, so check with your local building department. We flag likely permit and setback issues during the site visit so you find out before you order steel.
Yes, and we do it often. Bring us the kit and the drawings and we will put it up. Fair warning: some kits arrive short on hardware or engineered for a lighter snow load than Utah actually gets. We will tell you straight if we see a problem rather than bolting it together and walking away. Call 435-262-2794 before your kit ships if you can.
The steel itself goes up fast. A typical residential shop frame and skin is a matter of days once the pad is ready. What stretches the timeline is everything before that: permits, site prep, and concrete cure time. Realistically, plan on several weeks from first call to finished building, with weather being the biggest variable. Call to get your project on the schedule.
No minimum. Most steel builds clear a few thousand dollars anyway, so it rarely comes up. But if you have been putting off a call because you assumed your carport was too small to bother a steel contractor with, that assumption is exactly what we built this company to fix. Call 435-262-2794.
We can handle the whole build, foundation through finished panels, or just the erection if you already have concrete in place. Either way, tell us during the site visit so the quote reflects what you actually need. Get my free site assessment and we will sort it out on the spot.

Stop Sketching It. Start Building It.

You know where you want it. You know roughly how big. The only thing left is somebody who will show up and put it there. That part is us.
