Here is the honest version most carport sellers skip. There are two very different things people call a "carport," and they are not the same building. This is where the cheap online carports quietly get people in Utah. A tube shelter advertised at a great price is often rated for the snow load somewhere flat and warm sees, not the load your bench in Sanpete or Utah County actually carries.

But if you are already thinking about closing in more than a side or two, or you want security, storage, or a workshop, you are really pricing a garage or a shop. At that point it is usually better to build that from the start than to close a carport in later.

It depends heavily on which kind you build. A basic tube-frame shelter is the most affordable covered structure you can buy, while a taller engineered steel shelter rated for heavy snow costs more because it is a much stronger building. Size, roof style, leg height, and whether you need a certified snow rating all move the number. Mostly the framing and the engineering. A cheap tube-frame carport uses light galvanized tube and is often rated for mild snow loads. An engineered steel shelter uses heavier structural framing and is rated to your specific elevation's snow load. In a valley town the cheap one may be plenty. Up on a bench in Sanpete or Utah County that sees serious snow, the heavier build is what keeps it standing. We help you match the build to the site.
A properly rated one will. The problem is that a lot of cheap carports advertised online are rated for the snow load somewhere flat sees, not what your Utah bench carries. Not always. Carports can go on an existing slab, a gravel pad, or in some cases bare level ground with proper anchoring. A slab is nice for a clean floor and helps with a permanent structure, but it is one of the things you can skip to keep a carport affordable. Usually yes for a permanent carport, though a small portable one often does not need one. Requirements and setback rules vary between Fountain Green, the Utah County cities, and unincorporated county land, so check with your local building department. If your carport is for agricultural use on qualifying land, it may fall under Utah's ag exemption. We flag likely permit issues during the visit so nothing surprises you.
