A carport is the cheapest real structure you can put on your property, and for a lot of people it is exactly enough. Get the truck, the RV, or the tractor out from under the snow and the sun, and skip the cost of a full enclosed garage.
Here is the honest version most carport sellers skip. There are two very different things people call a "carport," and they are not the same building. Ridge Runner Steel builds both, out of Fountain Green, Utah, and we will tell you straight which one your site and your snow actually need before you spend a dollar.
The cheap tube-frame kind is fine for a lot of uses. But at 5,900 feet in Sanpete County, a light shelter that was never engineered for your snow load is a shelter that folds in February. That is the one thing worth getting right, and it is the thing a call to us sorts out fast.
Two Kinds of Carport. We Build Both.
Same job, very different building. The right one depends on what you are covering, where you are, and how much snow your site sees.
Tube-Frame Carport
The classic open carport: light galvanized tube framing, a panel roof, up on your pad or gravel in short order. The most affordable covered parking there is.
- Lowest cost to get covered
- Quick to install
- Great for cars, gravel pads, milder sites
- Certified snow and wind ratings available
- Add sides or ends later if you want
Engineered Steel Shelter
A real structural open-front building, framed the same way we frame our shops and barns. Taller, stronger, engineered to your exact snow load. This is the one that outlives everything around it.
- Engineered to your elevation's snow load
- Tall clearance for RVs and equipment
- Structural steel, not light tube
- Anchored to a real footing or slab
- The right call for high benches and heavy snow
The One Question That Decides Everything: Your Snow Load
This is where the cheap online carports quietly get people in Utah. A tube shelter advertised at a great price is often rated for the snow load somewhere flat and warm sees, not the load your bench in Sanpete or Utah County actually carries.
Ground snow load climbs hard with elevation here. Fountain Green sits near 5,900 feet. A carport that passes without a second thought in a valley town has to be a meaningfully heavier structure to survive up on the benches above Payson, Nephi, or Ephraim.
An uncertified carport is a roof on legs. A certified, properly engineered one carries stamped ratings for your county's snow and wind numbers and the heavier framing to back it. We make sure whichever carport you choose is actually rated for where it is going.
- We build and rate to your site's real snow load, not a catalog default
- Certified wind and snow ratings when your county requires them
- Heavier framing where the elevation demands it
- Honest advice on when a tube shelter is plenty and when it is not
What People Cover With a Carport
If it needs to get out of the snow and you do not need it locked up, a carport is usually the smart-money answer.
Vehicles & Daily Drivers
Keep the truck and the car out of the snow and off the ice scraper. The most common carport there is, single or double wide.
RVs & Boats
Tall-clearance shelters that keep the sun off the RV and the snow off the boat. UV and snow are what age them fastest.
Tractors & Equipment
Get the tractor, the side-by-sides, and the implements under cover without the cost of a full enclosed barn.
Hay & Feed Cover
An open shelter keeps hay and feed dry through the winter. Simple, cheap, and it does the job for acreage owners.
Work & Staging Cover
A covered outdoor work area for the shop overflow, the wood pile, or a staging spot that stays out of the weather.
Lean-To Additions
Add covered space along an existing shop or barn. A lean-to carport is the cheapest square footage you can add.
Carport, or Should You Just Build a Garage?
Worth being honest about, because sometimes a carport is not actually the right buy. The line is simple: a carport keeps weather off. A garage keeps weather off and locks things up.
If all you need is to get vehicles or equipment out of the sun and snow, a carport is the clear smart-money move, often a fraction of the cost of an enclosed building. But if you are already thinking about closing in more than a side or two, or you want security, storage, or a workshop, you are really pricing a garage or a shop. At that point it is usually better to build that from the start than to close a carport in later.
We build both, so we have no reason to steer you wrong. If a carport is right, we will say so. If you would be happier with a shop, we will tell you that too.
Why Property Owners Call Ridge Runner for a Carport
Three reasons, none of them marketing.
We Build Both, So We're Honest
A tube-kit dealer only sells tube kits, so that is always their answer. We build budget shelters and engineered steel, so our advice is about your site, not our inventory.
We Rate for Real Utah Snow
Whatever you choose, it gets built and rated for the load your elevation actually carries. No shelter going up here that was engineered for somewhere flat and warm.
No Job Too Small, and We Show Up
No project minimum. A single carport is a real job to us. Call Shaun and you get Shaun, usually on your property within a day or two.
How Your Carport Goes Up
Four steps, and the whole thing moves fast.
Step 1. Site Visit
We come out, look at your pad or ground, your access, and what you are covering. We confirm your snow load. Usually within 1 to 2 days of your call.
Step 2. Pick Your Build
Budget tube shelter or engineered steel, single or double, open or partly closed. You get a straight quote with the surface and anchoring spelled out.
Step 3. Surface & Anchors
Gravel, an existing slab, or a freshly poured pad, whatever you're building on. We handle the anchoring into it, and proper anchors matter more on a carport than people think.
Step 4. Up and Done
Carports are the fastest thing we build. Most go up quickly once the surface is ready. Then your stuff is out of the weather for good.
