Steel Barn Builder in Utah. Engineered for Real Utah Snow.
Steel-framed barns for horses, hay, equipment, and shops. Built to the snow load your elevation actually sees, with footings engineered to the frost line. 22 years of steel, and no project too small to take on.
No project minimum. Site visit within 1 to 2 days. We come to you.
A steel barn that goes up cheap and fast in St. George will fold the first heavy winter it sees in Sanpete County. Elevation is the whole story here, and most of the kit sellers advertising online do not ask you what yours is before they quote.
Ridge Runner Steel builds post-frame barns out of Fountain Green, Utah, and we build them for the snow this valley actually gets. Horse barns, hay storage, equipment shelters, and shop barns across Sanpete and Utah County. Owner Shaun Oram has 22 years in steel, works nights and weekends, and can be standing on your property looking at the site within a day or two of your call.
One honest note up front, because it matters for what you are buying. The traditional version of this building uses wood posts set in the ground. Ridge Runner builds steel-framed post-frame instead, which is straighter, stronger, and does not rot off at the base the way an under-treated wood column can. When people around here search for a "steel barn," this is almost always the building they actually want. If you have your heart set on wood posts, we will tell you honestly whether that is the right call for your site.
Steel Barns We Build Across Utah County & Sanpete County
Same post-frame system, configured for whatever your property needs.
Horse & Livestock Barns
Stalls, loafing sheds, and covered runs sized for the animals you actually keep. Open, ventilated, and built to handle a full winter of use.
Hay & Equipment Storage
Tall clear-span interiors with no interior posts fighting your equipment. Get the tractor, the baler, and the season's hay out of the weather.
Shop Barns
Half barn, half workshop. Overhead doors, a concrete work bay, and room for storage in the same building. The most requested barn we build.
Riding Arenas
Covered clear-span arenas and round pens. Wide-open interior with the roof engineered to carry mountain snow, not just a catalog number.
RV & Toy Barns
Tall-door barns for the RV, the boat, the side-by-sides. Sized around what you are parking and the clearance it actually needs.
Ag & Multi-Use Barns
Working ag buildings that may qualify for the Utah agricultural permit exemption. We help you figure out whether yours does before you build.
Your Snow Load Is Not a Catalog Number. It's Your Elevation.
This is the single biggest thing the online kit sellers get wrong, and it is the thing that puts a barn on the ground in February. In Utah, ground snow load climbs hard with elevation, and a frame rated for the valley floor is nowhere near enough up on the benches.
Fountain Green sits near 5,900 feet. That is not valley-floor snow. A barn here has to carry a meaningfully heavier load than the same barn in Provo or Orem down in the valley, and a barn up a canyon or on a bench above town carries more still.
We engineer every barn to the load your specific site sees. Utah even publishes a snow-load tool through the University of Utah that ties your exact location to a required number, and we build to it, not around it.
- Trusses spaced tighter in heavy-snow locations, not one-size-fits-all
- Steel frame sized to your ground snow load in pounds per square foot
- Roof pitch chosen to shed snow, with snow bars where they are needed
- The engineered drawings your building department will actually ask for
These are general Utah bands to show how fast the number climbs with elevation. Your building department sets the exact figure for your parcel, and we design to that specific number after the site visit.
Footings Below the Frost Line. This Is Where Cheap Barns Fail.
The second thing that puts a barn out of level has nothing to do with snow on top and everything to do with what happens underground. When water in the soil freezes, it expands and lifts. Set a post too shallow and frost heave will jack it up out of the ground over a few winters, and now your doors do not close and your frame is racking.
Utah's residential code is direct about it: permanent supports have to extend below the frost line, be built to the frost-protected shallow foundation standard, or sit on solid rock. There is no shortcut that passes inspection and also survives.
We engineer your footing depth to your locality's frost line before anyone breaks ground, so the pad holds and the floor does not heave later. Getting that spec right is what decides whether the barn is still square in ten years.
What a Steel Barn Costs in Utah County
Same rule as any steel build here: the frame is not the expensive part. Concrete, doors, site prep, and the engineering to pass your snow and frost requirements are what move the number. A bare kit price you see advertised online is not what a finished, standing, code-passing barn costs.
Ranges below are for a finished, erected barn, not a kit on pallets.
Real Sanpete and Utah County ranges, not a national average. Your number moves with elevation and snow load, concrete, door count, stall build-out, and site access. We give you a straight figure after we stand on your property.
The Utah Ag Exemption Might Change Everything for Your Barn
Here is something a national kit seller will never tell you, because they do not know your county. Utah law lets certain agricultural buildings skip the state construction permit. Under the ag exemption, a structure used solely for agricultural use and not for human occupancy may not need a building permit at all.
That can save you weeks and real money on permit fees, which in Utah commonly run several hundred to over a thousand dollars, with a review that can take two to six weeks. But the exemption is not automatic and it is not the same in every county. Whether you qualify, and how much land you need to qualify, varies between Sanpete County, Utah County, and each city inside them.
We have built enough barns across these counties to know which questions your planning department will ask. We will help you figure out, before you spend a dollar, whether your barn qualifies as ag or needs a full permit, and we handle the engineered drawings either way.
- Straight read on whether your build likely qualifies for the ag exemption
- Guidance on the acreage and use tests your county applies
- Engineered drawings ready when a permit is required
- Note: electrical, plumbing, and living quarters usually still need permits
Why Property Owners Call Ridge Runner for a Barn
Three reasons, none of them marketing.
We Build for Your Elevation
Your barn is engineered to the snow load your site actually carries, not a number printed on a national catalog. At 5,900 feet in Fountain Green, that difference is the barn standing or not.
We Know Your County's Rules
Ag exemption, setbacks, frost depth, engineered drawings. We have walked these through Sanpete and Utah County building departments and we know what they ask before they ask it.
No Job Too Small, and We Show Up
No project minimum. Call Shaun and you get Shaun, usually on your property within a day or two. Nights and weekends when your schedule needs it.
How Your Barn Gets Built
Four steps, no ghosting, no mystery pricing.
Step 1. Site Visit
We come out, check your elevation, grade, access, and setbacks, and talk through what the barn is for. Usually within 1 to 2 days of your call.
Step 2. Engineer & Quote
You get a real number and drawings engineered to your snow load and frost depth. We flag whether the ag exemption applies before you commit.
Step 3. Pad Ready
Footings poured to our engineered frost depth, pad cured and ready. Once the concrete crew clears out, we are staged to frame.
Step 4. Barn Goes Up
Frame, roof, panels, doors, stalls if you want them. Most barns go up in a matter of days once the concrete has cured. Then it is yours.
